Suck | Arts & Culture | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Rob Stefaniuk is the king of Canada’s “so bad it’s almost good” cult genre. Musical Suck turns vampirism into a playful metaphor for drug addiction: Though the comedy is too earnest, it’s still way more fun to see a band happily devour a groupie than sit through more wayward rockers shooting up in sketchy washroom stalls. Stefaniuk plays Joey, the main man for The Winners, always on the verge of making it until bassist Jennifer, played with gusto by Jessica Paré (who is now sinking her teeth into Don Draper on Mad Men), becomes a vampire and sets the band’s direction straight to stardom. As a satire, it’s just OK---Suck could use more bite---but there are random laughs, thanks in part to hapless human roadie Hugo (Chris Ratz), tasked with body removal, and the crazy supporting cast, which includes Malcolm McDowell, Dave Foley, Moby (as a meat-loving punk), Alice Cooper, Carol Pope, Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop. Also props to ex-Doughboy John Kastner for composing a vamp-worthy score
