Summertime and the livin' is crafty

Summer Lovin' Handmade Market

Halifax’s crafty community takes over the North Street Church (5657 North) next weekend with their Summer Lovin’ Handmade Market. Kyla Francis, Roisin Fagan and Sarah Evans have spent the past few months organizing, creating and crafting their way from last April’s Halifax Crafters Rainy Day Handmade Market. The triplets of craftville are thrilled once again to help showcase some of the city’s finest artisans.

“The Halifax Crafters are a group of several dozen friends who enjoy making things by hand and who have a unique vision to share,” says Francis. “The group is always changing, representing the sometimes transient aspects of life in a university town, and has gone through a few incarnations since the first shows were put on at the Khyber in 2005.

“We've been adding to our ranks as word is spreading, and we have now grown to a loose group of 25-35 crafters, so our handmade market has a really wide variety of goods for sale and there is always some new project to make us envy someone's cleverness.”

A potter herself, Francis' charming pop culture inspired dishware features rock n’ roll inspired teapots, cassette glasses and cups, television and remote control mugs and saucers and her famous Barrington drinking glass.

“Halifax has a lot of art and craft going on, but even with all the established venues we still feel like it can be intimidating and there is never a lot of room for folks who are making a go at art entrepreneurship to jump in at the large scale,” she says. “So we've found ourselves creating our own dream craft fair here where we can encourage our fellow makers to take a chance on an idea and have a reason to get it done.”

Stop by for treats of all varieties –both decorative and delicious, as the Summer Lovin’ Handmade Market opens on July 5 from 11:00 – 6:00 and July 6 from 11:00 –5:00. For further information check out Halifax Crafters
