Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

When: Sept. 11-Oct. 7 2012

Who’d have thought that a musical about cold-blooded murder and cannibalism set in the dreary, dreadful streets of 19th century London would be one of the most entertaining shows I’ve seen all year? The Neptune production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is a wonderful combination of a cracker jack cast, a brilliantly designed set and direction that keeps the show moving while giving time for characters to grow and change. Shane Carty shines as Sweeney Todd, making him equal parts human and monster. His voice is rich and perfectly suited to Sondheim’s tricky melodies. Shelley Simester is the perversely delightful Mrs. Lovett, a vey twisted entrepreneur. The show is jam-packed with wonderfully wrought musical numbers, but Carty and Simester’s duet about the flavours of various flesh stands out as the most outrageously and inexplicably funny. What a season-opener! -Kate Watson
