Tall Aboard: Your guide to the can't-miss events at the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta

Your summer fun scale is about to be as high as those billowing sails.

OK, kids, it’s gonna be one wild week on the waterfront: The Tall Ships are back for the first time since 2012, and this port city is ready to welcome them in full force. Here’s what you need to know to make your Tall Ships weekend all smooth sailing:

  • The ships will be arriving throughout the day on Friday, July 28. If you want to see them sail in, milling about the Halifax waterfront (and maybe checking out the new shack shack area) is a fun, summery way to fill the time.
  • The ships will be docked on both Halifax and Dartmouth’s shores (at the Halifax waterfront and Alderney Landing, respectively) until their grand goodbye, the Parade of Sail, happening Tuesday August 1 at 12pm (bonus points if you wear blue, à la Dalhousie University’s Blue Wave Initiative).
  • During the docking, there’ll be LOADS of live music on both sides of the water, from Celtic sisters Cassie & Maggie MacDonald to R&B powerhouse Reeny Smith. All the shows are free, and the full listings can be found here. The biggest tickets, though? Natalie MacMaster's Halifax waterfront show (the finale lines up with Saturday's fireworks, AND IT'S FREE— details here) and Joel Plaskett Emergency rocking Georges Island with Port Cities (details for that epic show here).
  • Looking for how to board the ships themselves? Free access (bring photo ID in case!) happens from 11am-4pm July 29-31.
  • Other fun bits: There’s going to be a carnival on the Halifax side throughout Tall Ships (get more info here), The Coast’s Tall Sips raises a glass to the celebrations from July 27-August 2 (more info here) and fireworks round out the fun both Saturday and Sunday nights (details here and here).
