Tenacious D
The Pick of Destiny
(Epic)
Like the movie, the album offers the odd jab of the madcap but fails to sustain the highs. This could be the moment obscenity became boring, proof of laziness. Jack Black’s repeated use of “fuck” irritates early on and never lets up, rendering most songs unplayable on the air and stripping them of legitimacy. Black and Kyle Gass are a tight team musically and decent guitarists. The guest stars, particu- larly Dave Grohl on “Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown),” save the album. If Black had learned a few new adjectives or shown a gram of subtlety, the result might have offered more than a bloated ripoff of a 15-year-old sketch from Kids in the Hall.
