Published October 09, 2003.The Besnard LakesVolume 1 (Breakglass)Springing from Godspeed City, formerly known as Montréal, The Besnard Lakes do their best to defy description. The husband-wife team of Olga and Jace Lasek creates sonic space as still as a nightcrawler at noon, then plop clangy guitar, stumbling rhythm and stuff that squeaks into it. It all tends to sound like the same song, which may or may not be intentional. The album should please those who like the tangential punchiness of early Eno, or an organ note sustained in vulnerable fashion. —Doug Taylor
