Earth Day visits us for the 40th time next week, and the Spring Garden Library is hosting a talk on urban gardening to mark the occasion. The Ecology Action Centre's Garity Chapman---project coordinator for the Urban Garden Project---will give the talk "It's going to be kind of an introduction to growing food in the city, so talking about community gardens that are around the city, how to get involved, different ways to grow in the city---I guess intensive growing for small spaces is one way of putting it," Chapman says. There are plenty of ways to enjoy gardening, whether you have a small backyard or none at all---guerrilla gardening, balcony gardens and land sharing, to name just a few. Chapman says last fall the EAC hosted a talk on school gardens at the Keshen Goodman Library, and a few school gardens have popped up. That's what she's hoping will happen after this library talk---little islands of "beautiful, edible landscapes in the urban environment" sprouting around Halifax.
