The Frank Popp Ensemble

Ride On

Published January 15, 2004.The Frank Popp EnsembleRide On(Unique)With a strange blend of ’60s white soul (a la Nancy Sinatra) and shameless sugar-coated pop, Frank Popp wants to be hip and super-stylish right down to his extra p. Funnily enough, though, Popp (the alter ego of an unnamed German DJ) succeeds without coming across as too much of a parody—that is if you don’t dig too deep. Alleg- edly, FPE samples heavily from obscure ’60s soul groups. But why should we care? This is fabulous fun as a midnight shakedown. —Dave Hayden
