The Gay

You Know the Rules

Published January 15, 2004.The GayYou Know the Rules (Mint)On its debut full-length, The Gay employs the distinctly Canadian mixture of great songwriting skills and not being able to sing all that well to great results. Their cutesy, offbeat writing is immediately familiar, but the band has a way of tiptoeing around the overdone. This could be attributed to the cross-section of gentle and driving, willowy vocals backed by drums reminiscent of Dreaming-era Blondie. The result is the best accordion-driven pop since…well, it’s really good. —Matt Charltoncategories: Canadian artist
