The Kentucky Derby

When: Oct. 2-Nov. 7 2009

Photographers Courtney Kelsey, a current NSCAD student, and Zac Barkhouse, a NSCAD graduate, went to the Kentucky Derby in 2007, but they didn't come away with the usual race day snapshots. "The main premise of what we're looking at is the relationship between spectators and the mass event," says Kelsey. "It's the difference between watching an event on TV, versus what goes on at the event." Kelsey continues, explaining that activities such as gambling, drinking and eating draw spectators' attention away from the race---something that wouldn't normally happen when you're sitting in front of your TV set. You can see this perspective of race fever until November 7. –Holly Gordon
