Like the most confessional parts of The Remains of Brian Borcherdt mixed with the subtlest of the Postal Service’s blips, ex-Carnations frontman Thomas D’Arcy quite sensitively blows your mind with this solo project. In a year of arena-style bombast, it’s refreshing to learn that hardscrabble, honest bedroom recordings aren’t extinct. D’Arcy is a great universal lyricist (on the single “Stay,” he teases “You can stay if you want to/but you can’t sleep in my bed”; on “Is She the One?” he threatens a player, old-school-like, that he’ll “punch your lights out”) and composer, offering indelible indie pop songs about relationships of varying degrees, exploring their emotions and complexities, backed up by quite lovely melodies. Good show.
