While essentially pointless, the surprisingly good live-action Beauty and the Beast is more than an exercise in cash grabbery. Emma Watson is an excellent Belle, and though the men are played by guys named “Dan Stevens” and “Luke Evans” (the male movie star is truly a non-event these days), they too comport themselves well, facially and vocally, as the Beast and Gaston, respectively. The movie is so well-cast that even the tiniest parts pop—Stanley Tucci wears gold shoes and doesn’t speak! Audra McDonald sings!—and that’s before you get to the peerless Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. Directed by musical master Bill Condon, Beauty’s move from cartoon to real life takes on an odd tone, especially Gaston: When he’s rejected, his response is to destroy Belle’s family and burn down the castle of (who he perceives as) his competition. Just like a guy from the internet! The singular affront is the title song, reimagined as oatmeal by Ariana Grande and John Legend. Celine forever.
