The Perfect Game

Rated PG (MPAA) 118 min. 2010

A well-intentioned sports pic about the first non-American baseball team to conquer the Little League World Series. The team is the Monterrey Industrials from Mexico, coached by a going-to-seed ex-Major Leaguer who has retreated back to his ancestral home in shame. There, wallowing in self-pity, he is cajoled into coaching and shaping local boys into a champion little-league team. The Perfect Game is unsubtle filmmaking and its motifs and gimmicks are groan-inducing. On the other hand, the movie is impeccably cast (Clifton Collins Jr., Cheech Marrin, Emilie de Raven, etc.), has its heart in the right place and is telling a worthy story. There are family films that are diabolical in their assembly line insincerity. The Perfect Game is never disingenuous. –Hillary Titley
