The wonderful Wizard of Oz

Neptune's holiday production strikes gold by adding flavour to a classic story.

I'm thrilled that the actors in Neptune's The Wizard of Oz don't subscribe to W.C. Fields' "Never work with children or animals" rule. The delightful, talented little munchkins and Butch, the adorable mop of a dog that plays Toto, are just some of the highlights in this spectacular holiday musical filled with great performances. Blair Irwin is perfect in the role of the spunky Dorothy Gale and Laura Caswell is sure to be the star of many a child's bad dream as the oh-so-wicked Wicked Witch of the West. This production manages to stay true to the beloved movie version while adding unique touches like some slinky, apple-shaking trees, a raucous and hilarious trio of crows and even a couple of pop-culture references. I can't think of a better introduction to theatre for older kids or a better outing for lovers of Oz.

To Jan 9, Neptune Theatre, 1593 Argyle Street, 7:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays 2pm, $30-$50
