Tony Joe White

Published November 25, 2004.Tony Joe WhiteHeroines(Sanctuary)Best known for his 1969 smash “Polk Salad Annie,” White sounds pretty much the same as ever, except for an A-list of duet partners: Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Shelby Lynne. The mix of Louisiana drawl, wiry guitar and purring organ transports you to a lazy Bayou evening. “Rich Woman Blues” entails the qualms of a kept man, pronouncing “condo-min-yum” with a befuddled derision. Like JJ Cale, White achieves a sublime brew from what little energy he chooses to expend. —Doug Taylor
