Too few cooks

Dear Liz Feltman;

Thank you so much for your recent article about what is wrong with the food industry in Halifax. I am a working cook in this city, and I could not agree more that we are severly underpaid. We are the most underpaid "Red Seal" accredited proffession. When you compare our wages to another Sealed proffession, say a carpenter or welder, the differences are shocking and disgusting.

So why aren't we paid more? Our work environments are just as dangerous. My father is a welder, so I have great respect for the trades, but the people who I have worked with throughout my carreer have cut, burnt, scraped, and pulled more muscles than any other tradesperson I have ever known.

Soemthing had to be done to right this wrong. We cooks deserve an equal trades wage as much as the next trades person. It is about time that the owners and patrons of this city, and the country, realised this.
