One Scene to Another
(Plumline)
The CD jacket for One Scene to Another is a variation on the Super Friendz’ Mock Up, Scale Down. The title—a nod to Sloan. And the music inside—although touted as a “Canadian” indie rock tribute—has Halifax Love written all over it, with 13 of the 16 covers written by bands from our neck of the woods. Thrush Hermit (“French Inhale”), Eric’s Trip (“Smother,” “Follow”) and the Super Friendz (“Karate Man,” “10 lbs.”) are all featured multiple times with especially stellar versions of Joel Plaskett’s “The News of Your Son” (Anthony Rochon) and a piano rendition of Sloan’s “Money City Maniacs” (by Mood Elevator). But the best thing is that this disc defies the usual tribute pitfalls by retaining the vibrancy and fun of the originals, while not resorting to purely verbatim transcriptions.
