Box of the Blues

Published October 16, 2003.VariousBox of the Blues(Rounder)Box of the Blues is a four-disc set documenting Rounder’s finer moments. It moves from the Mississippi Delta origins to the overblown nightclub sound making up the majority of the genre’s current incarnation. The contrast is blatant. The first disc offers a fantastic group of grumpy Delta-styled songs that peak with Blind Willie Mctell’s “Dying Crapshooter’s Blues.” The other three discs have highlights, but underline how the modern sound is distractingly happy for a genre called “the blues.” —Matt Charlton
