To the editor,
In your recent "Talking points" editorial you quote Danny Graham: "People are checking out left, right and centre. You can see it at the ballot boxes."
Mr. Graham is dead on. It is one of the reasons we formed our Right to Know Coalition. We want to encourage citizen engagement in the political process by promoting transparency and accountability in government, municipalities and other public bodies. Nova Scotia's Freedom of Information legislation establishes peoples' right to get the information. By using the Act citizens can become better informed about the reasons behind the decisions made by public bodies. It will also encourage them to be re-engaged and more likely to vote.
Few if any public bodies embrace transparency. It is up to the public, including young people, to see to it that they do. We must hold their feet to the fire. It is up to us.
