By now the formula is etched in stone: well-crafted sample-based beats play host to earnest rhymes balancing everyday working-class life with some of the most directly pointed political commentary in rap music, all delivered with the same pained-yet-sardonic intonation from MC to MC. Yy’s EP shakes up the formula by having half of its beats produced by anyone other than mcenroe (in this case The Gumshoe Strut), but still slides easily into sonic step alongside its labelmates. It’s not like it’s not good though. —Jesse Dangerouslycategories: Canadian artist
